Working principle of vertical packing machine

Function of vertical packing machine
a. Increased productivity. Increased productivity refers to the comparison with manual packaging. For example, in stationery packaging, an experienced operator may be able to pack a dozen products a minute, while the number of vertical packaging machine packaging per minute can be up to hundreds, the efficiency can be said to have improved more than ten times.

Use of vertical packing machine
Vertical packaging uses a single layer of film material (often called a web) rolled around a core. The continuous length of the packaging material is called the film web. The material can differ from polythene, cellophane laminates, foil laminates, and paper laminates. The film web is placed on the spindle assembly at the back of the machine.
During the rewind process, the film is unwound from the roll and passes over a floating arm, which is a counterweighted pivot arm located at the rear of the packaging machine. The arm is fitted with a series of rollers. During film transport, the arm moves up and down to keep the film under tension. This ensures that the film does not sway from side to side as it moves.
If the film is installed, the film passes through the jumper and then through the printing unit. The printer can be a thermal printer or an inkjet printer. The printer places the desired date/code on the film or can be used to place alignment marks, graphics, or logos on the film.
Film tracking and positioning
After the film has passed under the printer, it passes through the alignment photoelectric eye. The alignment photo eye detects the alignment marks on the printed film and then controls the pull-down tape to make contact with the film on the forming tube. The alignment photo eye keeps the film in the correct position so that the film can be cut in the proper location.
Next, the film passes through the film tracking sensor, which detects the position of the film as it passes through the wrapper. If the sensor detects that the edge of the film is out of its normal position, it generates a signal to move the actuator. This causes the entire film carriage to move to one side or the other as necessary to return the edges of the film to the correct position.
As the film rests against the shoulder (collar) of the forming tube, it is folded over the forming tube.
The forming tube can be set up for lap sealing or fin sealing. A lap seal overlaps the two outer edges of the film to form a flat seal, while a fin seal combines with the inside of the two outer edges of the film to form a seal that protrudes like a fin. Lap seals are generally considered to be more aesthetically pleasing and use less material than fin seals.
The rotary encoder is placed near the shoulder (flange) of the forming tube. A moving film in contact with the encoder wheel drives it. Each movement generates a pulse that is transmitted to a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). The bag length setting is set digitally on the HMI (Human Machine Interface) screen, and once this setting is reached, the film transport stops (only on intermittent motion machines. Continuous motion machines do not stop.)
The film is pulled down by two gear motors that drive pull-down friction belts located on either side of the forming tube. If required, friction belts can be replaced by pull-down belts that use vacuum suction to tighten the packaging film. Friction belts are usually recommended for dusty products because they are less abrasive.
Bag filling and sealing
The film will now pause briefly (on intermittent motion packaging machines) so that the molded bag can get its vertical seal. The hot vertical sealing strip moves forward and makes contact with the vertically overlapping parts of the film, bonding the film layers together.
On a continuous motion packaging machine, the vertical sealing mechanism remains in contact with the film at all times, so the film does not have to stop to receive its vertical seam.
Next, a set of heated horizontal sealing pliers are clamped together to form a top seal on one bag and a bottom seal on the next. For intermittent wrappers, the film stops to open and close the jaws that move in an action to obtain a horizontal seal. For continuous-motion packaging machines, the jaws themselves can move up and down and seal the film with an opening and closing motion. Some continuous motion machines even have two sets of sealing jaws to increase speed.
Ultrasonic is an alternative to "cold seal" systems, often used in industries with heat-sensitive or messy products. Ultrasonic seals use vibration to cause friction at the molecular level, which generates heat only in the area between the film layers.
While closing the sealing jaws, the product to be packaged is lowered down the center of the hollow-formed tube and filled into the bag. Filling equipment such as multi-head scales or auger fillers are responsible for properly measuring and releasing the discrete amount of product to be dropped into each bag. These filling machines are not a standard part of the packaging machine and must be purchased in addition to the machine itself. Most companies integrate the filling machine with the packaging machine.
After placing the product in the bag, a sharp knife in the heat-sealing jaws moves forward and cuts through the bag. The jaws open and the packaged bag falls out. This is the end of the previous cycle of the vertical packaging machine. Depending on the machine and the type of bag, the packaging equipment can complete between 30 and 300 of these cycles per minute.
The completed bags can be unloaded into a container or onto a conveyor and transported to downline equipment such as automatic check weighers, x-ray machines, box packing, or carton packing equipment.
